Records of AMCBW Local P-1 in Ottumwa, Iowa, 1939-1973 and 1986. Local P-1 represented workers at the John Morrell and Company meat packing plant in Ottumwa. Collection consists of correspondence, bulletins, dues lists, Ottumwa municipal information, material from local and state organizations, and a large amount of grievance and work related records. Also contains a small number of records from UPWA Local 1187 at Ralston Purina in Ottumwa, 1965-1968. Local 1187 merged with local P-1 in 1968. Includes a folder of news clippings on the Morrell Company compiled by Wilson Warren in 1986.

John Morrell and Company started packing meat in Ottumwa in 1877. Employees first unionized in 1918 when a Local 236 of the AMCBW was chartered. In early 1937 Morrell workers disappointed with the AMCBW created a local of the Austin, Minnesota based International Union of All Workers. In May 1937 this local union became CIO Local Industrial Union 32, the first CIO local chartered in meat packing.
